Transparency is key to fostering trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance this transparency within the Haitian National Police, Zanmi Lapolis is championing the use of body-worn cameras by police officers.

Body cameras are tools that can provide an unbiased record of police encounters, increasing accountability for both police officers and the public. They can play a pivotal role in holding officers accountable for their actions, deterring the use of excessive force, and providing valuable evidence in investigations.

As part of our initiative, we are working closely with the Haitian National Police to implement a body camera program that ensures officers are equipped with these essential tools. We are providing not only the technology but also the necessary training for officers to effectively use body cameras in their daily operations.

However, the implementation of body cameras is not a straightforward process. It raises important questions around privacy rights, data storage and access, and the need for clear policies and procedures. That’s why we’re advocating for a thoughtful and measured approach to their use.

We’re helping to develop policies that balance the benefits of body cameras with respect for privacy and civil liberties. These policies govern when and how the cameras should be used, who has access to the footage, and how long the footage is retained.

We are also investing in community education about the use of body cameras and the policies surrounding them. We believe that for trust to be truly built, the community needs to understand how body cameras are being used and how their rights are being protected.
